In this foundation studio course, students will complete practical projects in fabricating garments using principles and techniques of garment construction.
In this foundation studio course, students will complete practical projects in fabricating garments using principles and techniques of garment construction. They will be instructed in cutting, hand sewing and industrial machine stitching, combined with training in lining, pressing, detailing and finishing a skirt and blouse.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Construct a skirt from a basic pattern
Construct a blouse from a basic pattern
Produce samples of different construction techniques
Operate an industrial sewing machine
Operate an over-lock machine
Recommended companion class: Patternmaking 1: Foundations of Flat Patternmaking for Skirts and Bodices
Prerequisites: None.
Required supplies and books for all classes are listed on the main website, at schooloffashiondesign.org/supplies. Students are responsible for having the required materials for the first day of class. You may purchase a Clothing Construction Kit from SFD.
Progress reports will be issued to all students by the time 50% of the course has been completed, either in person, or via an online portal.

This is a very hands on class for beginners. We start making projects since first class. You will learn hand stitching, how to use a sewing machine, fix your favorite clothes, the use of patterns, among many others.
Do you spend a lot of money on alterations hemming jeans and pants? Learn how to save those really cool jean hems with a special technique the dry cleaners don’t know about! You will follow a step-by-step guide to learn the special technique on how to shorten your jeans and keep the original hem.
