In this two-day course, attendees will apply proven techniques to case studies and learn how to ask the right questions and tackle technical matters. By following the skills learned in Controlling Construction Costs, participants can direct and regulate many aspects of construction activity to ensure that their companies get what they contracted and paid for.

Controlling Construction Costs helps you understand the nature of change orders and contractor claims, and provides approaches to controlling them. It shows how to impact construction costs through building control considerations into bid documents and contract language.

This course is for project management and auditors involved in any aspect of controlling construction costs.

  • Prevent and detect construction overcharges
  • Administer construction contracts more effectively
  • Plan your construction contract strategy to complement your control system to receive the most value for your construction dollar
  • Strengthen controls to reduce opportunity for fraud, conflicts of interest and kickbacks.

  • Cost control objectives in project planning, document development, bid/contract awards through construction and contract closeout.
  • Multi-step approach to effectively control construction costs
  • Cost control roles and responsibilities
  • Preventing and/or detecting typical overcharges in lump sum and cost plus contracts
  • Bid document format and language
  • General contract provisions to enhance cost controls
  • Special considerations for time and material and unit price contracts
  • Using computer database applications as part of the operational control system for cost plus and time and material contracts
  • Cost control considerations with change orders to lump sum or guaranteed maximum contracts
  • Special cost control considerations with contractor “claims”
 

Customized Learning Experience:

  • Controlling Construction Costs is designed to be a customized learning experience that directly relates to the way the seminar customer does business with their construction contractors. 
  • We only conduct our Controlling Construction Costs in-house seminar sessions if we have some upfront knowledge of the way our seminar customer is doing business with their construction contractors and architects.  The minimum documentation we request for advance review at least two weeks before the scheduled seminar date includes:
  • Two (or more) examples of executed construction contracts with all contract attachments that illustrate the typical construction business deals that are in-place on active (or recently completed) projects
  • Applicable RFP documents and applicable proposals (or bids) from construction contractors and/or construction managers (CM) for current (or recently completed) projects
  • Applicable excerpts Division 1 (General Requirements) and Division 16 (Electrical) from project specifications for current (or recently completed) projects
  • Two (or more) examples of large complex change orders with all supporting documentation that have been approved on current (or recently completed) projects
  • Two (or more) examples of contractor or CM payment applications with all supporting documentation for current (or recently completed) projects
  • Applicable construction department organization chart and a list of projects currently under construction or in the design stage of the construction cycle
