Course Details

COSHH applies to a wide range of substances and preparations (mixtures of two or more substances) which have the potential to cause harm to health if they are ingested, inhaled, or are absorbed by, or come into contact with, the skin, or other body membranes.

Hazardous substances can occur in many forms, including solids, liquids, vapours, gases and fumes. They can also be simple asphyxiants or biological agents. Every employer who undertakes work which is liable to expose an employee to a substance hazardous to health shall provide that employee with suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training to comply with the COSHH 2003 NI &  2002 Mainland UK Regulations.

Course pre-requisites

Learners are required to be 16 years of age or above

 

Course content

  • Recognise and state the statutory requirements and relevant Approved Codes and guidance documents
  • Understand the Routes of entry into the human body for substances, chemicals & biological agents
  • Understand the health effects of biological agents
  • Understand the health effects of Carcinogens and Mutagens
  • Understand the health effects of Asthmagens
  • Understand what SVHC’s are
  • Understand the risk assessment & COSHH assessment process
  • Understand the information available in MSDS sheets
  • Understand Prevention of Exposure
  • Understand how to control Exposure
  • Understand the Selection process of suitable PPE & RPE
  • Understand Ventilation requirements and selection
  • Understand how to Monitor Exposure
  • Identify procedures to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies
  • Understand the requirements for Health Surveillance

Course qualification

Learners will be issued an In-House certificate of completion and a card upon request

Refresher Training

Every 3 years or if Legislation Changes
