Crochet is great for settling the mind and encouraging relaxation. Learn to do basic stitches, read patterns and complete projects in a relaxed and friendly space – left handers very welcome.
Description
The repetitive movements of crochet help the brain make more serotonin, which can decrease tension and feelings of depression. We’ll move through all the steps from the starting slipknot to reading patterns and diagrams and making your first crochet projects.
You’ll learn to make a granny square, change colours and how to increase and decrease. You’ll also find out more about the notations and abbreviations of crochet stitches so you can make those awesome crochet projects you've been waiting to make!
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
• Discuss the benefits of crochet for relaxation and alleviation of mood
• Read a basic crochet pattern and recognise crochet terminology
• Choose yarns and hooks for projects
• Use a range of stitches with confidence
• Complete at least one project of your choice (granny square, keychain, garden decoration)
Suitable for all beginners, both left and right-handers and those who may have struggled to learn to crochet. Initial materials provided but please bring along any yarn or crochet hooks you would like to work with.
Note:
Courses need a minimum number to go ahead so if we don't have enough enrolments a few days before the start date, we have to cancel. We'll let you know by email so please check yours regularly.
Night school, evening classes, adult community education (ACE) – whatever you call it, people coming to their local secondary school after hours to learn together is a New Zealand tradition. Maybe they’re returning to learning, want to gain new skills and confidence, meet new people, keep mentally active, follow a particular passion or become more involved in their community – there are lots of reasons why people want to continue to learn. In this digital age, there’s a wide range of opportunities available for on-going study but getting together with a group of like-minded people to learn something new is hard to beat.
The Wellington High School Community Education Centre (CEC) is always looking for people with great skills to share their knowledge and experience with others and need talented, empathetic and inspirational tutors to deliver courses for adults and whanau. The following information will tell you more about the processes for setting up courses within our programme and what’s involved in being a tutor at the CEC.
