CT280: Advanced Colorist

This is a five-day class for those that have some experience working with color but need to fill in gaps in their knowledge of color theory, color science, and grading techniques.

The course is designed to improve skills, efficiency, and creativity and includes learning techniques so that you continue to learn at an accelerated rate beyond the classroom.

The course starts with theories on the physics and psychology of color. How does the brain interpret visual data?

How do we define a color gamut and what are the key differences between sRGB, rec 709, DCI P3, and BT 2020? We then look in-depth at grading tools, processing orders, and the quickest cleanest solution for common grading challenges.

The course includes methods for all genres from music videos to feature films and from the internet, to broadcast and cinema. There is a devoted section to changes that HDR displays bring and you will explore the different techniques and deliverables required for HDR projects.

Whilst some material is provided all students are encouraged to bring their own graded and ungraded material to work within the class.

Resolve systems are used for demonstration and practice, but the class is system agnostic and users of other systems are welcome.

This class is often attended by cinematographers, DITs, editors, and VFX, as well as colorists and we, welcome the input from their different viewpoints and experience.
