As the slaves were not allowed to take their drums when they were taken across the ocean, they created a new rhythm tool known as the clave and respecting the clave rhythms is the key to dancing salsa!
Salsa means sauce or mix and a dance mix of other dance styles with the mother of Salsa being Son, and the Afro Cuban movements of expression are from the Orishas (deities) from the Yoruban tribe in Nigeria, and Palo from Congo.
It is a great workout and full of fun surprises as you will learn to dance suelta (solo), casino (in couple) and in rueda (wheel - dancing in a circle with a group of other couples).
BailaAfrika Afro Latino Dance Family was established in March 2012 and is more than a single dance teacher, a DJ or a dance school...it is a growing Afro Latino Dance Family with global members. BailaAfrika hosts local and international specialists in African and Afro Latin dances to grow and upskill the community, whilst promoting local and international cultural exchange. The teaching style focuses on the appreciation of dance origins, histories and cultures and the power of connection to dance across boundaries.
BailaAfrika's founding members spent years learning Cuban Style Salsa and Kizomba from some of the most respected teachers whilst they lived in London and it's dynamic, passionate and skilled teaching team proudly identify as lifelong students.
Although considered the pioneers of the Kizomba scene in South Africa, having introduced lessons, socials and parties in 2012 outside of PALOP private functions, it is equally passionate about all things Salsa from Cuba and proud of its African roots.
After completing your 4-week course, we'll assess your level and let you know if you're ready to move to the next level. Enjoy dancing at our socials with dancers of various experience levels.
Salsa Absolute Beginners, is for the student with little or no dance experience that wants to learn the fundamentals of cross body, musicality & more.
This Latin-American dance is also a much-loved dance in Europe. We offer a beginner and advanced course for you to enjoy.
