Develop your writing and language skills

Have you been learning English for a long time but your writing just doesn’t seem to be improving? Are you quite a fluent speaker but find formal speaking difficult? Do you feel ‘stuck’. This course will release you! You will focus on how to improve the structure of your writing both the whole text, paragraphs and sentences.

You will work on understanding the grammar of the language, and the skills you learn to develop your writing will help you improve your more formal speaking whether this is for job interviews, meetings at work or giving presentations.

This course is ideal if you have been living in the UK for several years, feel quite comfortable in speaking English as a second language, but lack confidence in your literacy skills.

What is the course about?

This course will help you become a more confident and accurate writer of English and a more fluent speaker of formal English. You will work on the structure of your writing so you can organise texts such as letters, emails, essays and reports so that the ideas and information are linked and relate to each other.

You will look at how to write paragraphs and also focus on sentence structure so that your writing is grammatically correct and you understand why.

You will work on transferring what you learn about writing to your formal speaking so you structure and organise this speaking more effectively, use an appropriate register with suitable vocabulary and can speak well in a variety of more formal situations such as job interviews, the workplace and when giving presentations.

What will we cover?

• how to organise and structure different types of texts such as letters, emails, essays and short reports

• how to begin and end a piece of writing

• how to write a paragraph correctly – what a paragraph should contain

• how to structure a sentence – use of clauses

• how to punctuate – full stops, commas, semi-colons, colons

• how to choose the right vocabulary for formal speaking

Creative Writing Workshop

Writing is similar to the opening of a chess game: the pieces must be put in place at the start. The key to successful stories and descriptions lies in structure and planning. Both of these are at the heart of what we do in creative writing.
