The diploma in game design programme is a combination of theory and practice of game design and user experience, with coursework delving in the humanities, social sciences, art, mathematics and computer science. Students learn the fundamentals of design in computing systems, sound, user experience, technicalities and interactive story-building, applying the knowledge and skills that they learn into creating a game from start to finish in a real-world production environment.

  • Students in the Diploma in Game Design programme specialize in the areas that matches their strengths and interests:
  • Game Design and Development, including game mechanics and history, design documentation, scripting and programming, 2D and 3D level design, character design, playtesting, interface design, product management, and team game project implementation.
  • The Humanities and Arts, including writing, psychology, film, audio, architecture, drawing, 2D & 3D art with the option to study advanced topics in these areas.
  • Foundational Math and Science Courses, including the fundamentals of scripting languages, mathematics and physics.

Academic Roadmap

  • First year will allow students to grasp the foundation of computer systems and programming while introducing them to various areas of design. In year two, their knowledge is expanded further with subjects providing in-depth information on areas such as UI, UX, game production phases as well as key entrepreneurial skills. In their final year, students will be given the opportunity to build their portfolio and put their knowledge to the test by undertaking an industry placement.

Potential Careers
Systems Designer

  • The systems designer helps lay the groundwork and design specifications for other developers to build large sections of a game or other application. A systems designer must rely on careful testing and have a solid understanding of technical limitations and efficiencies. They must be able to communicate well with an interdisciplinary team.

UX Designer

  • The work of the user experience (UX) designer can be seen across many industries, from games to business to museums and more. A UX designer seeks to make a product or experience more satisfactory and accessible for the end user, whether the end result is an intuitive mobile phone app or a more streamlined in-store checkout system. To get there, the designer will rely on a large set of tools and responsibilities, including user research, paper prototyping, wireframing and usability testing.

Game Designer

  • Game design is a broad term that can encompass many unique job types. In general, a game designer works to create and refine the interrelated systems that make up a game-playing experience, from the mechanics of combat in a fighting game to the complex menu navigation in an online RPG. They often work closely with engineers and people from other disciplines to implement and fine-tune their design concepts.

Entry Requirements
Diploma In Game Design

  • Pass Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) with minimum 3 credits (3Cs); OR
  • Pass Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) with minimum 3 credits (3Bs); OR
  • Pass Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) (Level 3, MQF) in related field subject; OR
  • Pass in any qualifications equivalent to Certificate (Level 3, MQF) in related field with a minimum CGPA of 2.0; OR
  • Pass Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) or its equivalent with a minimum of Grade C (GP 2.0) in any subjects; OR
  • Pass Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) with a minimum grade of Maqbul; AND
  • Pass an interview or an assessment of a portfolio conducted by The One Academy.

Note: Exemptions for interview or portfolio review requirements may be granted to candidates with valid academic qualifications in the relevant field.
