The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (L5DET) is widely recognised as the standard of teacher training required for the post-14 sector, including further education colleges, sixth form colleges, other adult learning providers and employers (apprenticeships). It is a teaching qualification which extends into investigation and research into current practice, theories and models relating to education and training.
This two-year, part-time programme will help student teachers to develop the underpinning knowledge, skills and behaviours required to deliver excellence in effective learning and assessment strategies in a range of educational settings.
It prepares student teachers for all aspects of planning, delivering and assessing teaching and learning in the post-14 sector, and is suitable for in-service and pre-service candidates, who can evidence a formal commitment to complete a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice as part of the qualification.
The programme will help student teachers to become effective, professional teaching practitioners who are able to gain employment in their chosen subject specialism as teachers or trainers, in a range of educational settings.
The L5DET programme is delivered in-person, at Stephenson and Melton campuses. The location of weekly, face-to-face taught sessions will change each semester (September to January, January to May), therefore candidates must be able to travel to each site as required.
What will I learn?
As a student teacher on the L5 DET programme, you will complete a range of units which will provide you with the foundational theories, principles and models of teaching excellence, including: ? Theories, principles and models in education and training ? Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training ?
Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training ? Wider professional practice and development ? Inclusive practice ? Understanding and managing behaviours in a learning environment ? Evaluating learning programmes ?
Preparing for the Coaching and Mentoring role ? Action research in education The qualification will be assessed by a combination of formal written assessments, a portfolio of teaching practice and a minimum of 8 observations of teaching practice over two years.
The programme prioritises the application of theory into practice, alongside development of the ?reflective practitioner?, and aligns with the Education & Training Foundation Professional Standards for teaching practitioners in the post-14 sector.
In order to achieve the qualification, student teachers on this L5DET programme are required to find time outside of college and any employment to complete the required assessment tasks.
Where could this course lead to?
This qualification can help individuals to progress into roles with additional management responsibilities, such as Advanced Practitioner or Curriculum Manager, or with further training to gain employment in specialist roles including English, Maths, ESOL or SEND.
Teachers who achieve the L5DET may also progress onto further qualifications such as a Masters in Education or PGCE. Graduates of this programme may also progress onto achieving the professional status of QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Sector), which is gained after successfully completing a six-month period of Professional Formation and maintained through membership to the Society for Education and Training.
What qualifications or experience do I need?
Candidates should be qualified/experienced in the subject they intend to teach, have access to 100 teaching practice hours and ideally possess a minimum of a level 2 qualification in English and Maths.
All student teachers joining this programme will undertake an initial assessment of skills in English, Maths and in digital skills. Candidates are required to provide formal evidence of a minimum of 100 hours teaching practice in an appropriate educational setting, prior to enrolling on the L5DET programme.
Where candidates are not currently employed by SMB Group, they must also provide evidence of a current DBS check prior to starting any work placement at any of the three SMB Group campuses.
Candidates who have already achieved the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, or equivalent, are welcome to apply for this programme, however this is not a compulsory entry requirement for the L5DET.
Candidates who have achieved the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, may transfer 20 hours of practice and 2 hours of observed practice towards the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.
How long is the course?
The L5DET qualification is delivered and assessed over two years, part-time. Face-to-face delivery for this programme takes place every Tuesday evening, from 3pm ? 8.30pm (5.5 hours per week), at either Stephenson or Melton campus. The location of delivered sessions will alternate between the two campuses, each 15-week semester.
