World Health Organization (WHO) has shown that since 1990 the neonatal mortality rate has dropped by 51% worldwide from 36.6 deaths/1000 live births to 18.0 deaths/1000 live births in 2017. Reducing neonatal mortality is an essential part of the third Sustainable Goal of the World Health Organization.

This reduction has mostly been achieved by initiating and developing educational programs for nurses and parents, such as Help Baby Breathe Program by the American Association of Paediatrics.

A study done in 2016 by Trevisanuto D et al, shows that the biggest problem in the developing countries is access to basic resuscitation equipment and techniques. Resuscitation and stabilization are a large part of the so called Neonatal Golden Hour which is aimed to reduce mortality and the burden of morbidity.

Continued education for nurses has been shown to increase the nurse’s professional behavior and advance patient management thus improving patient outcome in the NICU.

Therefore, Dräger MEA Academy will be launching a digital course to support continuous medical education for neonatal nurses focusing on the Dräger Five Neonatal Best Practice Keys approach:

  • Neonatal resuscitation
  • The safe use of oxygen and pressure
  • The safe use of the thermal environment
  • The use of expressed breastmilk
  • Implementing early developmental care and skin to skin contact.

Dräger Digital Neonatal Nurses Education course will consist of 8 modules, conducted monthly in a form of a live webinar and virtual demonstrations.

The main objective is to provide a comprehensive well-rounded overview of the main physiological systems of the newborn, as well as practical tips on how to improve patient care.

Furthermore, practical demonstration of the main devices used in the NICU will be included in the module. As a result, after each module participants will have a clear understanding of the physiological systems of the premature babies and how to best support their development.
