Economics (Major) is offered by Howard University. Howard University, a culturally diverse, comprehensive, research intensive and historically Black private university, provides an educational experience of exceptional quality at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels to students of high academic standing and potential, with particular emphasis upon educational opportunities for Black students.

All majors must complete thirty-seven (37) credits in Economics. Electives may be chosen from the following areas:

  • General economics and economic theory
  • Banking and monetary economics
  • Public finance and fiscal policy
  • Labor and social economics
  • Economic development
  • Mathematical economics and statistics
  • International economics and urban economics

  • ECON-001: Principles of Economics I 3 credits
  • ECON-002: Principles of Economics II 3 credits
  • ECON-170: Intermediate Microeconomic Theory 3 credits
  • ECON-171: Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory 3 credits
  • ECON-180: Statistics for Business & Economics 3 credits
  • ECON-184: Introduction to Econometrics 3 credits
  • MATH-026: Applied Calculus 4 credits

  • AFST-101: African World: Introduction to Contemporary Africa

Divisional Studies

  • Students must complete the Divisional Studies requirement from Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Approved list of courses are given in your Student Reference Manual and Directory of classes booklet.

Foreign Language Requirement

  • For all majors in economics, the requirement of fourteen (14) credit hours consists in the completion of four (4) semesters in sequence of one foreign language, ancient or modern, or the equivalent which is determined as follows.
  • A score of 560 or higher on a language test of the College Entrance Examination Board or the completion of a language sequence begun in secondary school, with placement to be determined on the basis of the score on the College Entrance Examination Board Test.
  • All economics majors are encouraged to take Mathematics for Economists (ECON-182) or Mathematical Economics (ECON-183) and Introduction to Quantitative Economics (ECON-184) which introduces students to the mathematical exposition of basic economic theories and econometric techniques they need to carry out their program in Economics.
