This programme is based in the School of Economics and Finance (SEF) on Queen Mary’s Mile End campus.

Semester A 
Compulsory modules: 

  • Macroeconomics 
  • Microeconomics 
  • Econometrics 

Plus one elective module from: 

  • Introduction to Machine Learning 
  • Behavioural Economics 
  • Corporate Finance 
  • International Economics

Semester B 

  • Students need to take five elective modules. Any combination of electives is permitted, but it is suggested students choose one of the following three Pathways:

Big Data and Quantitative Analysis

  • Applied Time Series and Forecasting 
  • Large Language Models and Textual Analysis in Economics and Finance 
  • Big Data Applications (for students who have taken Introduction to Machine Learning in semester A) 
  • Design and Evaluation of Public Policy 

Competition and Public Policy 

  • Design and Evaluation of Public Policy 
  • Development Economics 
  • Competition Policy and Regulations 
  • Games and Information 

Macroeconomic Outcomes and Financial Markets 

  • Macroeconomic Policies and Market Outcomes 
  • Applied Time Series and Forecasting 
  • International Finance 
  • Advanced Asset Pricing

Semester c

  • Independent Project: Under the supervision of a faculty member, apply your knowledge to a real-world economic question.

Career paths
The MSc equips students with theoretical grounding and applied skills for professional economists, opening a wide range of economics careers through the three Pathways: 

  • Big Data and Quantitative Analysis for careers in government departments, financial institutions and consultancies as economic forecaster, quant analyst, risk analyst. 
  • Competition and Public Policy for careers in consultancies, regulatory agencies, economic research institutes and think tanks, government departments. 
  • Macroeconomic Outcomes and Financial Markets for careers in central banks, commercial and investment banks, financial institutions, and consultancies. 
  • Academically focused students often continue onto the MRes/PhD track where full funding is available.
