Formerly known as PTLLS, the Award in Education and Training is a short course designed to equip new teachers with the basic skills and attributes to deliver productive taught sessions.
The award is suitable for those who work, or intend to work as:
Teachers in Further Education
Teachers or trainers in the voluntary sector
Training personnel in a work-based setting within industry, the public sector or HM Forces
Technicians and support staff in Further Education
Entry Requirements
Normally applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in their subject area and have a strong command of English language and numeracy, ideally with GCSE Mathematics and English Language at grade C or above or equivalent. Applicants without one or more of the above will still be considered.
Structure
On this course, you will develop your skills as a teacher through practical activity and the study of theories and contemporary issues within education and training. You will join fellow learners from a range of backgrounds for lessons and discussions, creating an effective peer network where a variety of teaching practice can be shared.
You will attend College one evening a week, with tasks to be completed independently between sessions. The course is made up of three units, each of which are assessed through a variety of methods, with the course culminating in learners teaching a session (micro-teach) to peers on the course.
Teaching & Learning
The course is taught by a team of specialist lecturers, highly experienced in the field of education. Teaching aims to demonstrate good practice and therefore employs a range of styles which include discussions, workshops, lectures and active group participation. Your time in class will develop your skills and knowledge to inform your own teaching practice and help to develop your own teaching style.
The emphasis throughout the course is on inclusive learning and teaching combined with reflective practice.
The course covers topics including: roles, responsibilities and relationships in teaching and training environments; understanding and using inclusive learning techniques; teaching approaches to plan, deliver and assess inclusive teaching sessions; and the art of reflective practice and how to provide effective feedback to individuals.
Assessment
Assessment is completed through a combination of methods including: assignments, presentations, essays and teaching observations will be incorporated.
