Proposed by Salovey and Mayer (1990) to describe a form of human intelligence which involves the ability to perceive, manage emotions and take them into account to better adapt to one's environment, this concept has 2 dimensions:

  • Personal – ability to recognize one's emotions to better adapt to the situations in which one finds oneself
  • Social – ability to recognize the emotions of others in order to adapt effectively in social and professional relationships
