Course Overview
This course will allow you to develop your understanding of what language is and how we use it. In the first year, you will learn about texts of all kinds –written, spoken and electronic, and gain valuable skills in analysing how language creates meaning.
You will learn about language variation and diversity: how and why people use language differently according to where they live, their age, gender, occupation and sexuality.
In the second year, you will investigate how the English language has changed over time, as well as studying the fascinating topic of child language development. You will use English creatively to write for different audiences and purposes.
You will be required to conduct independent research into aspects of language use. English Language works well with Psychology, Law, Media Studies, English Literature, Theatre Studies, Health and Social Care and Sociology.

English Language is a traditional A level, highly respected by universities and employers. It is a perfect choice for those planning a career where linguistic skills are valued. As a student on AS or A Level English Language course you have the opportunity to become a Literacy Leader – supporting students on Entry Level and Level 1 English courses and reinforcing your own knowledge of how language works. There will also be a trip to The British Library in London.
