A-level English Language and Literature is an integrated course that combines the study of literature and language.
This involves studying texts such as poems, plays and novels, and closely analysing the language using literary and linguistic terminology (such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, similes, metaphors, alliteration).
What Will I Learn?
In year 1 you will study an anthology of poetry from 16th to early 20th century, a play (Kindertransport by Diane Samuels) and a novel (In Cold Blood by Truman Capote).
In year 2 you will study a play by William Shakespeare (King Lear) and a novel (The Color Purple by Alice Walker) as well as complete a coursework portfolio on the dystopian genre, including a piece of creative writing and an essay comparing two novels.
Entry Requirements
You will require 5 GCSEs A*-C including English Language
You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.
Assessment
Year 1: 2 exams; Year 2: 2 exams and 2 pieces of written coursework.
