Hazards involving excavations and trenches, can lead to serious incidents involving workers at construction sites. Workers can be critically injured or die in cave-ins. Many cave-ins occur on small jobs of short duration, such as water, gas, electrical and sewer line connections.
Employers, supervisors and workers must follow the requirements set out in the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Regulations for Construction Projects.

Safety Matters was founded in 2008 by Jennifer Richards. Jennifer began her career in the construction industry in 1987 as a Carpenter’s Apprentice and became a Journey Level Carpenter in 1992.
After 12 years working as a Carpenter, she transitioned to Construction Safety working as Safety Director for a large general contractor in the area. Safety Matters is a third-party Safety and Health Consultation Company.
That specializes in on-site safety trainings, workplace inspections, accident investigations and assistance with Labor & Industries disputes. In 2017, Safety Matters Training Institute opened in South Seattle.
The Institute offers open enrollment courses which gives companies the opportunity to register a single worker or a group of workers. We also offer customized coursed, if a client has preferred dates/times, we will do our best to accommodate their scheduling needs.

This 4-hour course is designed to provide a complete overview of risks associated with trenching and excavations. It covers the OSHA 29CFR Part 1926 Subpart P – Excavations. Each participant will receive educational material and a card indicating satisfactory course completion.
Participants are taught from OSHA’s excavation standard (29 CFR 1926-Subpart P) which requires workers in trenches and excavations to be protected. Can-ins are perhaps the most feared trenching hazard; but other potentially fatal hazards exist, including asphyxiation, toxic fumes, drowning.
Master practicing excavation and trenching the safe way with this course that focuses on adhering to OSHA standards. On a hands-on field trip, you’ll learn how to use instruments like penetrometers and torvane shears and conduct a soil sedimentation test.
