The competent person must be familiar with evaluating conditions, classifying soil, selecting and installing a proper protective system, and ensuring other hazards are properly controlled.

This course is designed to provide attendees with the knowledge required to meet the OSHA Competent Person requirements and includes.

This course addresses excavations for ALL industries, and is intended for all workers, including managers, supervisors, superintendents, foremen, operators, and safety personnel.

 

Topics include:

  • Evaluating excavations, including trenches, to recognize hazards
  • Applicable standards, including 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P
  • Roles and responsibilities of competent persons
  • Properly analyzing and classifying soil
  • Cave-in protective systems, including sloping, shielding and shoring
  • Contributing factors (e.g. contributing loads, water, vibration, environmental)
  • Other related hazards and requirements
  • Training requirements
