Course topics include practical soil mechanics and its relationship to the stability of shored and unshored slopes and walls of excavations, introduction of various types of shoring (wood timbers and hydraulic), soil classification, and use of protective systems.
Upon course completion, students will have the ability to assess their employer’s compliance with the OSHA Excavation Standard, determine protective systems for excavation operations, and training requirements.

This 8-hour Trench Competent Person course is intended for Owners, Supervisors, Managers, Operators, and Safety personnel who are required to oversee Excavation and Trench work.
The course is designed to provide participants with an awareness of Federal and State requirement, covering practical considerations for safe and compliant excavation and trenching.
Participants are taught from OSHA’s excavation standard (29 CFR 1926-Subpart P) which requires workers in trenches and excavations to be protected. Can-ins are perhaps the most feared trenching hazard; but other potentially fatal hazards exist, including asphyxiation, toxic fumes, drowning.
