We will guide you through a series of simple, practical and very effective learning exercises using everyday household objects, as well as the occasional use of your own anatomy.
We will guide you through a series of simple, practical and very effective learning exercises using everyday household objects, as well as the occasional use of your own anatomy.
Iain and Leonard’s video demonstrations will guide you through the practical exercises. You will be able to reflect upon and even share your experiences with others throughout the course if you wish.
As well as the preliminary exercises, the following three exercises are exclusive to Exploring 3D Anatomy Plus;
Haptic Surface Painting Exercise
This exercise involves the palpation of the living anatomy of the upper limb and the immediate marking of the skin with food colouring, in order to understand it in three dimensions. After this exercise you will be able to apply this technique to any part of the living anatomy.
ORDER Exercise
This exercise involves a cyclical step-by-step learning process called Observe-Reflect-Draw-Edit-Repeat.
This process supports observation of and reflection about three dimensional anatomical structures and underpins all of the exercises found in the Exploring 3D Anatomy MOOC.
Surgical Instrument Exercise
This exercise aims to improve your understanding of where your surgical instrument is located within the three dimensional space of the body. We demonstrate this exercise for application with a laparoscopic instrument, but you can use extend this technique to any instrument.
How will this help my clinical practice?
There are strong links between critical observation, spatial abilities and anatomy learning within the educational literature.
To examine, diagnose and treat patients it is essential for clinicians and healthcare professionals to gain a comprehensive understanding of the structural and functional anatomy of the human body.
Our bodies exist in three dimensions. To effectively study human anatomy, it is therefore essential to develop an understanding of the three-dimensional spatial arrangement of the body’s anatomical regions, systems, and structures.
Who is the Course For
This course is primarily aimed at anyone who is studying anatomy. You will also benefit from this course if you are a healthcare professional, clinician, surgeon, medical educator, or if you work in medical imaging. While this course is primarily for those working in medical contexts, no previous knowledge or experience is required, and these exercises are transferable to any context where visualisation and 3D spatial awareness are valuable skills.
Course Agenda
Month-long course with video exercises for participants to follow in their own time. Asynchronous discussion with teaching staff at various touchpoints throughout the course to discuss and compare experiences.

Quality
The Quality Assurance of Basic Medical Education (QABME) framework helps to safeguard standards at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed Malaysia). Its application is important in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
The framework ensures training is monitored, maintained, developed and approved. It also ensures that the right outcomes in new doctors are being met. The QABME process involves evidence-based visits and an annual report from each school.
NUMed Malaysia’s MBBS also meets the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Code of Practice. It is also in alignment with QAA subject benchmarks.
The last QAA review in 2016 commended our management of academic standards and quality of learning. The QAA awarded us a 'judgement of confidence' – the highest rating available.
Quality governance of the programme is also overseen by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.
NUMed Malaysia is fully recognised by both the General Medical Council and the MMC. We adopt the published guidance on UK medical education delivered outside the UK available on the General Medical Council website.
International assessment recognition
Newcastle University UK has become one of 12 universities in the world to achieve five plus QS Stars from QS Quacquarelli Symonds – the first international assessment of its kind.
More than 150 universities in over 35 countries have now signed up to the QS Stars rating system. The assessment system rates universities against pre-established international standards.
We are proud to have been awarded five stars in the following areas:
Research
Teaching
Internalisation
Specialist Criteria
Employability
Facilities
Innovation
Inclusiveness
The VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for Complementary Therapies is a knowledge-based qualification which will provide you with a sound foundation to pursue a career as a complementary therapist.
This course is essential for anyone looking to offer massage treatments. The human body is a complex machine which forms the structure of your entire body.
There are no pre-requisites to enrol on to this course, just an interest in the subject and passion to learn. Anatomy and physiology is a pre-requisite to some courses that we offer fast track. This course will require home study and assignment work.
This accredited and certificated course provides students with a carefully sequenced learning experience that combines structured reading with online learning and assessment activities in preparation for a final online examination.
This course is aimed at support staff directly working with people who have a brain injury. It adopts a social model of disability and provides a basic awareness about the structure of the brain and the impact of the related injury. It is suitable for all direct care/support staff.
