Gain an understanding of how children develop and learn through our Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) programme. By completing the programme, you’ll gain Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS). This specialist award is designed for those who wish to specialise in work with babies and young children from birth to five years old.
For potential applicants:
Make a difference for young children – a career in early years teaching is very rewarding
By becoming an early years teacher, you’ll make a lasting, positive impact on children’s wellbeing and development
What you'll learn
Overview
Through the 12 month part-time programme you’ll develop your professional skills and knowledge to lead the learning of all young children.
You’ll spend significant amounts of time practising in your work setting. You’ll need to exhibit the capability to teach across the age range. Consequently, additional placements will be tailored to meet your individual needs.
You’ll spend between 6 and 11 weeks (usually 6-8 weeks) away from your base setting on placements, depending on your previous experience.
This programme is suitable for you if you fit either of the following criteria:
You’re already employed in an early years setting/early years department of a school
You’re newly recruited to an early years setting to undertake Early Years ITT through an employment-based route.
How will I be assessed?
In order to be recommended for Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS), you’ll need to undertake assignments which assess your knowledge and understanding relating to teaching and learning.
You’ll need to demonstrate your understanding and skills in planning, teaching, assessing and evaluating children's learning. All assessments will demonstrate that you have met the early years teachers’ standards.
How will I be taught?
You'll attend university one day per week during school term time, where you’ll be taught in seminars and workshops. We’ll encourage you to think critically about research, national initiatives and classroom practice. You’ll explore and critique the relationship between theory and practice.
You'll train in at least two schools or settings, where you’ll work with teachers, learners, additional adults, a mentor and an academic tutor to support your professional development. You’ll become familiar with the work of a school/setting and the nature of, and the relationship between, teaching and learning.
We’ll support you along the way to ensure you become a creative and caring early years teacher.
