This course examines the fundamentals of designing a fashion collection. Students will explore a fusion of conceptual inspiration and technical apparel design and apply real-world practices of marketing plans, competitive research, and costing. Students will develop critical tools to appreciate and contextualize fashion design and better comprehend issues such as labor practices, size inclusivity, and sustainability.

Be inspired by our downtown location, exceptional instruction, and regular opportunities to explore the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago as you learn to think and do in a new world of visual communication and ever-changing technology.
In this 2 hour class you will learn the basics of fashion illustration. I’ll show you step by step how to draw a fashion figure, create dynamic and interesting poses and develop personalized croquis.
Students will learn an extensive range of hand stitches, how to shape a garment foundation, design and tailor a variety of pocket styles, design and shape lapels and collars, and how to set structured roped sleeves.
Learn the proper way to stitch continental and basketweave stitches, how to tack in and out of the canvas, and how to read and properly stitch with the grain of the canvas.
This class is meant for beginners or people who want to refresh their skills. The sample quilt you will be making covers all the blocks in Alex Anderson’s Start Quilting book. Want to learn how to knit? Or need a refresher because you haven't knit in a long time? In this class you will learn how to cast on and create the basic stitches of knitting, how to “read” your work, and how to fix mistakes. No previous experience is required.
