This short course aims to provide participants with an overview of current fintech products and regulations in South Africa. A further aim is to provide participants with a holistic overview of the South African regulatory framework governing various aspects of fintech. This will enable participants to succeed as they navigate the rapidly evolving fintech regulatory landscape.
Course Outcomes
At the end of the course, the participant should be able to:
Explain the global and South African fintech landscape, both in terms of what products are on offer and how those products are regulated;
Identify regulatory risks that arise in the fintech industry;
Examine how the distinct regulatory risks overlap and interact;
Understand how to mitigate the identified regulatory risks; and
Analyse the potential financial and reputational implications of failing to manage regulatory risks.
Course Content
The course consists of the following modules:
Overview and regulation of the fintech landscape, including crypto assets, crowdfunding, peer-to-peer lending and buy now, pay later (BNPL);
Data protection in the fintech space;
Central bank digital currencies;
Anti-money laundering and digital identity;
Electronic contracts, signatures and application programming interfaces (APIs);
Automated contracts;
Cloud storage; and
Exchange control and tax.
