OSHA requires that prior to using fire extinguishers employees should be trained in the basic principles of fire extinguisher use and the hazards involved with fighting incipient stage fires.

Then on an annual basis fire extinguisher training should be provided. This course will cover: classification of fire types, distinguishing fires that can be fought, hazards of extinguishing fires, types of fire extinguishers available, and extinguishment techniques.
