The recent years have witnessed an evolutionary change in imaging the fetus at 11-14 weeks. No longer is ultrasound in first trimester limited to localization of pregnancy, establishing viability and accurate dating. With the advent of high‐resolution ultrasound and transvaginal scanning, a significant amount of information about the fetus can be obtained early in first trimester.
The first trimester module provides an overview of the role of first trimester ultrasound in screening and diagnosis of fetal anomalies. A number of fetal anomalies can now be consistently diagnosed in the first trimester and their appearance at 11-14 weeks is discussed in a systematic manner. Current concepts of aneuploidy screening and screening for preclampsia has also been discussed in this module with case scenarios.
