Regulation 851 is more specific and states that a lifting device is only to be operated by a competent person.

Classroom Training
This includes the theory of equipment operation, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, hazards identification and related safety issues. The scope of the class content is designed to address the requirements of the Ministry of Labour Guidelines and CSA Standards.

Practical Skills Assessment/Training
An assessment of the competency of each participant, on each of the identified types of equipment, is conducted in their work environment. For beginners, subsequent practical training can take up to three days. The scope of the practical training is designed to address the requirements of Ministry of Guidelines and CSA Standards.

In-Workshop Remedial Coaching
Coaching of participants is provided during skill assessment when unfamiliarity or unsafe techniques with the equipment is observed.
