Course Details

Course Description: 

Only trained and competent operators shall be permitted to operate a powered industrial truck. All powered industrial truck operators must be trained and certified per OSHA  29 CFR 1910.178(l).

 

Topics include but not limited to:

  • Operating instructions, warnings, and precautions for the type of truck(s) the operator will be authorized to operate.
  • Differences between the truck and the automobile.
  • Truck controls and instrumentation: where they are located, what they do, and how they work.
  • Engine or motor operation.
  • Steering and maneuvering.
  • Fork and attachment adaptation, operation, and use limitations.
  • Vehicle capacity.
  • Refueling and/or charging and recharging of batteries.
  • Operating limitations.
  • Surface conditions. 
  • Load manipulation and stability.
  • Pedestrian traffic.
  • Ramps and other sloped surfaces. 


Pre-requisites:

  •  There are no pre-requisites for this course.

 

Objectives:

  • Understand the training requirements for performing work on and operating  Fork Lifts.
  • Understand the general structural requirements.
  • Apply safe work practices for working with Fork Lifts.
  • Apply safe truck operation.
  • Identify types of vehicle(s) being used in the workplace.
  • Identify hazards of the workplace created by the use of operation of the truck.

 

Course Materials: 

This course consists of several different components which include power point presentations, lecture, real life case studies, class discussion and hands on demonstration. Students must bring a picture ID to the class.
