French Language – DELF and DALF

The DELF and DALF are two different tests offered by the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework, each of which is divided into six levels, starting from A1 and going through to C2.

In France, these levels are tested using the DELF and DALF exams.

  • The DELF exam tests the A1 and A2 levels, which are seen as beginner or “basic,” and the B1 and B2 levels, which are intermediate or “independent.”
  • The DALF tests C1 and C2, which are referred to as advanced or “proficient.”

DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) - A1, A2, B1 and B2

The DELF, or Diplôme d’études en langue française is administered by the International Centre for French Studies (Centre international d’études pédagogiques or CIEP) for France’s Ministry of Education. It is a Certification for non-native speakers, testing their French-language abilities. The test covers the beginner and intermediate learners, as it tests levels from A1 through B2

DELF categorises these exams into four different levels i.e. DELF A1, DELF A2, DELF B1 or DELF B2 tests and each test is specially tailored to students of that level.

The DELF is one of the most useful diplomas to have, particularly when applying to French jobs or for French university degrees. Most undergraduate and graduate programs require a B2 diploma, though some undergraduate programs accept B1. B1 and B2 are also the levels that most French workplaces require if your job is going to include a moderate amount of French.

What are the DELF levels?

As mentioned DELF consists of four levels:

  • DELF A1

In this level, one can recognise and use familiar words and phrases, introduce themselves or someone else, ask and answer basic questions about home, family, surroundings etc. One can also communicate and understand things in a basic way, if spoken to slowly and clearly.

  • DELF A2

As you continue to learn, you will develop the skills required for understanding more complicated tasks. You can now talk using simple words and phrases and express your wishes with simple words. You can take on conversational tasks based on topics such as shopping, describing your surroundings and telling someone what you need.

  • DELF B1

This is a level where one can go beyond the basic and talk about everyday tasks. It includes the ability to understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar subjects and take part in basic social interactions at work or school, as well as manage most situations that come up when travelling. The person is able to communicate in simple and clear language on subjects of personal interest, talk about their desire or goals.

  • DELF B2

Once you reach this level, you can now read and understand complex texts, such as technical articles in your area of expertise. One is able to communicate in a fluent manner that is easy for a native speaker to understand. Has a rich vocabulary, where one can express their opinions on current events and talk about it pros and cons.

The DALF (The Diplôme approfondi de langue française)– C1 and C2

The DALF or Diplôme approfondi de langue française is alsoadministered by France‘s Centre international d’études pédagogiques, or CIEP, (International Centre of Pedagogical Studies) for the country’s Ministry of Education. It is the advanced level language diploma. It is very similar to the DELF, though it is not always offered at the same test centers at the same time as the DELF is being administered.

Two DALF tests exist: one for level C1, and the other for level C2.

What are the DALF levels?

Being the advanced level diploma, it consists of 2 levels:

  • DALF C1:

With C1, one can understand a wide range of long and complex texts, including any subtleties in language. They are able to speak freely and fluidly about their ideas without stumbling for words. They are also able to speak in a clear, organized way about complex topics involving social, professional and academic context. You will have no trouble constructing well-thought-out arguments.

  • DALF C2:

You have the power to understand the world around you. You are capable of understanding almost anything you read or hear. You will be able to summarize events and affairs from written and verbal sources. You can express yourself precisely in a way that conveys finer shades of meaning.

How to Sign Up for the DELF or DALF

It’s time to certify your French skills. You are free to choose an exam that best suits your level. The exams are conducted by various testing centers located throughout the world. Registrations for these exams are easy and can be done by signing up for them on their website. The registration fees differ depending on the testing centre.
