It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation.
Working environment may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. Workplace atmospheres may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.
Target Audience
This accredited training is suitable for use in the following conditions/environments and workplace situations:
Confined spaces
Enclosed and partially enclosed spaces
Hot work
Storage tanks, silos, pits, pipes, shafts, ducts, transport vehicles and ships
Testing as part of issuing a work permit
Monitoring as part of working under a work permit
Open areas
Holding the gas tester by hand
Lowering the gas tester into a space, e.g. on a line
PPE Requirements
Enclosed footwear, long pants and a sleeved shirt are required at Baseline Training courses.
Entry Requirements
Pre-Requisite Unit - There are no formal entry requirements stipulated for this program
Fitness Requirement - Training and assessment involves moderate to high physical activity. Candidates are required to be able to freely walk, bend and twist, perform safe lifting techniques and be familiar with typical workplace risk and safety protocols
Language, Literacy and Numeracy Skills - Candidates must possess basic literacy and numeracy skills

Upon successful completion of this course, each candidate will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
This course aims to provide candidates the necessary skills and knowledge to undertake testing and sampling of hazardous environments, including:
Types and selection of gas detectors
Sampling regimes and techniques
Inspections and maintenance
Calibration and bump tests
Risk manage
The assessments for this program have been designed to assess a candidate’s competence in accordance with the relevant endorsed Training Packages, applicable Legislation & Australian Standards and the proprietary requirements of the organisation or workplace.
The assessments will consist of both written and practical components.
Classroom based or onsite workplace training
Delivery consists of face to face and practical simulations
