Gas Tests Atmospheres

This unit is about testing the working atmosphere to determine if it safe for the proposed work. Testing involves the use of electronic test apparatus. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation.

• Identifying common chemical asphyxiants
• Identifying common irritants, corrosives and flammable gases
• Conditions under which atmospheres become hazardous
• Select and bump test equipment
• Determine gas testing regime/sampling pattern required
• Identify atmospheric contaminants and implement control measures
• Use gas testing equipment and monitor
• Interpret and report readings
• Actions taken if readings unacceptable
• Clean and maintain gas testing equipment
• Maintain records of tests and results
