The General English courses are intended to provide international students with the English foundation and skills they need to function in Australian society and specifically to undertake further vocational courses.
The program focuses on language used in daily situations and provides a solid foundation in grammar and the four main English skills (i.e., Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking).
The courses integrate the modes of language – listening, speaking, reading, and writing to improve student’s understanding of the forms, features, and functions of the English language.
Students will enhance their skills in analysing, responding to, and composing a range of language items they will encounter in their social interaction in Australia. The courses will also assist students in their development and understanding of various learning strategies and styles.
Structure and Articulation with Other Courses:
The General English courses consist of four levels: Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate. Each level has a 10-week study period. Students will be expected to attend a weekly 20-hour face-to-face class from Monday to Thursday.
Articulation:
Successful completion of the General English course at Upper-Intermediate level enables entry into the IELTS Preparation course or the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Upper-Intermediate course.
Assessment:
There are two different types of assessment tasks (formative and summative), which are built upon the teaching/learning content covered in each course of study. At the end of each level, students will be required to sit for a final exam to demonstrate their learning outcomes.
