Course Details

Class Experience

Participants work with their classmates and the instructor during class towards developing their beginning listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an immersion setting; all class activities are conducted primarily in German. The three A1-level courses are for those who are looking to learn German from the beginning in a formal setting.

Those who fully participate in and complete A1.1, A1.2, and A1.3, typically over the span of 3 semesters, will ideally be prepared for the A1 Goethe Exam, recognized globally as proof of German language ability. Read more here about the Goethe Institute and their language exams. 

 

Class Requirements

No prerequisite German knowledge needed

 

What you'll learn

Everyday expressions, talking about yourself and others (profession, name, age, residence, hobbies, etc.), and about everyday objects (furniture, office technology, etc.)

 

Sample Class Format

  • Once a week in a 1.5 hour meeting, students work through activities in the coursebook in partners, small groups, and collectively as a class. Chapters are organized thematically. Students answer questions, written and verbally, in response to reading texts listening to dialogues, and watching short videos.

Other Things To Know

Homework

Participants work through activities in the workbook, which supplement the content from class lessons. Participants should expect to spend at least an equal amount of time outside of class in addition to weekly class meetings. Work in the workbook is checked independently via an answer key.
