This course is an introduction to German for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use with no prior knowledge of German required. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing.

This course aims to build general basic comprehension and communication skills in beginners German and an introduction to cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of basic language principles.

Unit 1

  • Cafe or Tea?
  • International words in German
  • Greetings, introductions
  • The alphabet, numbers and prices
  • Ordering and paying in a cafe
  • Short reading texts
  • Pronunciation, word accent
  • Verbs in the present tense
  • Formal and informal ‘you’

 

Unit 2

  • Language in the Course
  • Naming objects in the class room
  • Asking questions
  • Reading and understanding short texts
  • Nouns
  • Genders, singular, plural
  • Articles
  • Negation 'kein'
  • Compound nouns

 

Unit 3

  • Cities, Countries, Languages
  • German names for cities and countries
  • Saying where they are situated, Geography
  • Asking questions and answering questions about cities and countries
  • Past tense of to be/sein
  • Word order in sentences and questions
  • Practice pronunciation and intonation

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
  • Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
  • Can demonstrate the skills, language and attitudes required for further study of German.
