We offer classes at the beginner, advanced beginner, intermediate, high intermediate, and advanced levels.
Our German classes are fun and practical, with an emphasis on conversation, and are taught by a native speaker (David from Berlin) with extensive teaching experience.
Different Levels:
Beginner. Our entry-level course starts from zero but moves pretty quickly and includes weekly conversation practice. Students are assumed to have no prior knowledge but this course may also be appropriate for people who studied years ago but have forgotten most of the grammar or never had much opportunity to speak.
Advanced beginner. Our level-2 course is for people who know basic grammar including the present tense for regular verbs and the most common irregular verbs (to be, to have, to go). Students considering this course should already be able to form and understand simple sentences in the language, even if they’re not quite conversational.
Intermediate. This level is for students who are comfortable using the simple past as well as the present and who can understand and communicate at a decent level, even if they still make mistakes. In this course, we cover mid-level grammar, including different ways to talk about the past and get you talking with frequent conversation exercises.
High intermediate. This level is for people who are able to speak and understand with relative ease, even if they still don’t know some tenses and want to build fluency. We study the conditional and future tenses and introduce students to the dreaded subjunctive. The teacher also leads more open-ended discussions than in levels 1-3.
Advanced. Our highest-level grammar-based course is for students who are fairly fluent but who want to study more complex grammar, such as the imperfect subjunctive, and colloquial usage. This course is less structured around grammar than the levels leading up to it, with at least half of each class dedicated to conversation.
Film and conversation. In this conversation-based course for advanced speakers, students watch Spanish-language movies at home (on Netflix, Hulu, etc) and we discuss them in class. Each week, we talk about the plots and cultural context, and the instructor aligns this discussion with the review of grammar, vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions.
Idlewild’s mission
To help students learn a new language in the most enjoyable, effective, and authentic way possible.
Why Idlewild?
Effective. Idlewild will teach you to speak, understand and enjoy studying a language even if you think you can’t learn a language or have been bored with other methods.
Engaging. Idlewild’s classes are fun, practical, and stimulating – with just the right mix of teacher presentation and conversation practice.
Authentic. Our classes and materials feature native speakers using colloquial language in everyday situations. You’ll learn to think in the language, like a native, and not just to translate, like a tourist.
Proven. Our method is based on our own experience teaching group classes for more than a decade in New York City and on the latest research on language acquisition.
About Idlewild
Idlewild was founded in New York in 2008 as a bookstore focusing on travel and international literature.
We began to offer language classes in our bookshop in Manhattan in 2010 and in a second location in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Cobble Hill in 2012.
We added online classes in March 2020, the same month we closed our bookshop and published our first language textbook in 2022.
Our in-person classes are now taken by more than 3000 New Yorkers every year, while our online classes are taken by students in 30 US states and more than a dozen countries.
Idlewild was the original name for New York International Airport, renamed JFK in 1963.
Our courses at Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta correspond to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and range from A1 for beginners to C2 for language skills at the highest level.
