With more than 100 million native speakers, German is the most common native language spoken in the European Union (EU). There is even a push on to make German one of the working languages of the EU.

 

Facts about the German language:

  •  It’s not surprising that it’s so common, given that it’s the only official language in three countries (Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein) and ranks as an official language in another three (Switzerland, Luxembourg and Belgium).
  • German also ranks highly as a national minority language in yet another four countries (Poland, Denmark, Italy and Hungary).
  • The Calligraphy: Until the mid-20th century, German would be written using a different script of the Latin alphabet: the Fraktur script. This form of Gothic script was introduced in the 16th century and remained in use until the Second World War.

 

Produce language fairly understood to the native speakers in some limited contexts. Be able to get general ideas from short texts. Engage in conversations giving more details about themselves, their lives, and about their surroundings.
