This is an intensive workshop that presents a comprehensive overview of the emerging Blockchain technology. In the recent past, the speed of technological innovation across industries has grown exponentially. 

The blockchain was developed in 2008 as the infrastructure supporting the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. However, it was soon realized that blockchain’s ability to provide a new form of distributed database or ledger could be applied across a broad range of applications in financial services. Hence, block-chain based solutions have been developed and trialed by many different organizations.

As the Monetary Authority of Singapore has said, “Distributed ledgers may be applied in any area which involves contracts or transactions that currently rely on trusted third parties for verification.” 

An industry consortium led by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the island’s Association of Banks has released the source-codes of three successful distributed ledger prototypes for inter-bank payments, in an effort to encourage other financial institutions and central banks to experiment with the technology.

Various Central banks across the globe are actively testing block-chain technology for a variety of different use cases, everything from new central bank digital currencies, new payment systems, to records management – having some kind of audit trail for certain functions and so on.
