The SMU Department of World Languages and Literatures emphasizes practical learning. From the first semester of study, you acquire the ability to speak, listen, read, and write, even as you absorb valuable cultural information that will equip you to move with ease and sophistication through a globalized world.
You’ll start with classical Attic Greek, the dialect spoken and written in Athens during the fifth and fourth centuries BC: a language of tragedy, comedy, oratory, history, and philosophy. With a knowledge of the basic grammar and vocabulary of Attic, you can later go on to read the epics.
Did you know that roughly a quarter of the English language is of Greek Origin. Not only is it among one of the oldest languages ever spoken, but also, it’s at the base of much of the vocabulary of European languages.
Our Greek language lessons, taught by our skilled native instructors, are designed to build conversational skills.
