Working in the oil and gas industry poses some of the highest risks globally, including the potential for fire, explosions, and frequent hand and finger injuries. These injuries consistently represent a significant portion of incidents within the industry, comprising nearly 50% and sometimes up to 80% of all recordable incidents in certain facilities.

Hands and fingers are vulnerable to various hazards such as being caught between objects, chemical exposure, vibration, heat, cuts, bruises, fractures, burns, punctures, amputations, cold conditions, and exposure to infectious agents. With a higher concentration of nerve endings and pain receptors, injuries to the hands and fingers are particularly excruciating compared to injuries to other parts of the body.

Hand and Finger Safety Guidelines are governed by several regulations:

  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132 (d) (I)
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart I, which covers Tools – Hand and Power
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212, which outlines Machine Guarding Requirements
