Hazardous Materials

Course Description

This course covers OSHA General Industry Standards and other consensus standards that relate to the use of hazardous materials. Course topics include compressed gases, flammable liquids, dipping & coating, spray finishing, anhydrous ammonia and liquified petroleum gas (LPG).

Upon course completion students will have the ability to evaluate hazardous materials activities in accordance with applicable OSHA standards.

Learning Outcomes:

• Recognize compressed gas types
• Recognize uses for flammable liquids, ammonia and liquified petroleum gas (LPG)
• Describe spray finishing and dipping & coating operations
• Assess storage and handling hazards associated with compressed gases, flammable liquids, ammonia, and LPG
• Apply abatement methods for storage and handling hazards associated with compressed gases, flammable liquids, ammonia, and LPG
• Assess operational hazards of spray finishing and dipping/coating
• Apply abatement methods for the operational hazards of spray finishing and dipping/coating

Individuals responsible for overseeing safety in industries such as: Construction, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Maritime and General Industry.

Learning Outcomes

• Implement OSHA’s Hazardous Communications Standard
• Maintain a chemical inventory
• Identify Proper Personal Protection equipment (PPE)
• Develop response procedures to hazardous material releases and/or spills
• Identify hazardous vapor monitoring requirements
• Assess compliance with OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910 regarding flammable and combustible liquids.
