This course is designed to provide students with foundation information that will develop and enhance skills and knowledge as a Health and Safety Representative in the workplace.

 

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • The functions of a HSR under the HSWA 2015
  • Understanding health and safety legislation as it relates to HSR.
  • Health and safety management system standards.
  • Risk management processes including controls.
  • Provisional Improvement Notices.
  • Incident reporting and investigation.

 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the role and functions of the Health and Safety Representative (HSR) under the Heath and Safety at Work Act 2915 and its Regulations
  • Explain the role of a HSR and as an advocate for workers.
  • Identify the obligations of a PCBU and WorkSafe NZ towards the HSR.
  • Describe the risk management process and the importance of communicating with workers and management.
  • Describe and demonstrate the powers and obligations that a HSR has in terms of issuing a provisional improvement notice (PIN) and how and when to direct a worker to cease unsafe work.

 

Course structure

The course is a theoretical session. Students are assessed continuously during the course.
