In 5 days you will learn how to carry out the important functions and responsibilities of being a Health and Safety Representative in your workplace. You will gain an understanding of the functions of being a Health and Safety Representative and the legal requirements and boundaries associated with this role. This course replaces the Safety and Health Representatives (SHREPS) course from 31 March 2022.

An elected Health and Safety Representative is a vital communication nexus between employees; these representatives aid in upholding work safety and organisational management, while ensuring employees value safe work methods. Their role contains many functions including conducting workplace inspections, assisting in investigations and liaising between employees and management staff.

The Health and Safety Representatives Introductory Training is accredited by the Work Health and Safety Commission. Participants will be provided with an understanding of how to carry out the important functions and powers of a being a Health and Safety Representative in the workplace.

This course now refers to the new WA Work Health and Safety legislation that came into effect on 31st March 2022. All ATI-Mirage WHS trainers have extensive industry experience and have actively involved in the transition to the current WHS legislation.

 

Outcomes:

  • Obtain a comprehensive knowledge of the WHS Act legislative framework
  • Understanding of the role and functions of WorkSafe WA and its interaction with HSRs
  • Understanding of duties and responsibilities of PCBUs, officers, workers and other parties under the legislation
  • Knowledge of the nature of the consultation process with workers as required of the primary PCBU by the Act
  • The purpose and formation of a work group (or work groups) within the workplace
  • The election process for HSRs and deputy HSRs and disqualification provisions
  • The functions of Health and Safety Committees (HSC)
  • What are the entitlements, rights and protections of an elected HSR and deputy HSR
  • Developing negotiation, communication and problem-solving skills and strategies as an HSR to represent a work group and to resolve work health and safety issues
  • Gaining awareness of risk management and the use of risk controls, including the duties and responsibilities of various PCBUs under the legislation
  • How HSRs can use their functions and powers to contribute to risk management activities in the workplace
  • The issue of PINs and the right to cease, or direct the cessation of, unsafe work
