Course Details

This course provides students with the necessary skills to be competent as a Height Safety Supervisor under AS/NZS1891.4.

  • Height Safety Supervisors must be able to: (1) perform unsupervised harness-based skills, (2) competently supervise height safety operators and (3) supervise or participate in a first response rescue of a worker.

 

Course objectives:

By the end of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • WHS Act & Regulations, Codes of Practice and Australian Standards.
  • Risk management.
  • Legal requirements and ramifications of team activities.
  • Safety precautions.
  • Non-operational and operational communication processes.
  • The four components of a fall protection system (anchor, body support, connecting means, and descent/rescue).
  • Specialty systems that combine components of a fall arrest system.
  • Duties of a height safety supervisor.
  • Rescue response and capability.

 

The student will also be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • How to build and utilise anchor systems.
  • How to select and use the correct harness for the required tasks.
  • How to correctly use the connectors.
  • How to prepare a rescue plan covering a range of rescue situations and techniques.
  • How to deploy specialty systems.
  • Encouraging others/team members.
  • Team building.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Reporting information.

 

Course assessment

The trainer will assess a student’s competency in this course, both theoretically and practically. The theory assessment consists of multiple choice and short answer questions.

 

The practical assessment will require students to demonstrate:

  • Supervisory skills in selecting, using and maintaining height safety equipment.
  • Selecting, inspecting, putting on and correctly fitting a full-body harness.
