Keep learning the basics of this fascinating language with an emphasis on practical use and the development of your listening and speaking skills. This course is designed for those who have completed beginners: module 1 or equivalent. The course will introduce students to essential vocabulary and grammar structures, with a focus on practical communication in everyday situations.

What is the course about?

The course aims to give you a basic knowledge of Hindi, enabling you to understand how the language works and to start communication in Hindi in various situations.

What will we cover?

Telling the time, days of the week, months, meals of the day, talking about daily routine, giving commands and making requests (in a shop) ordering food in a restaurant, reading and writing basic Hindi words/phrases.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • say what the days of weeks and times of day are

  • talk about your daily routine

  • introduce a friend

  • ask for items and prices in a shop

  • order Indian food in a restaurant

  • use Hindi numbers

  • write simple sentences using Hindi script

  • grammar: present imperfective tense, imperative, oblique nouns, how much/ many, gender and number, possessive, to have.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed Hindi beginners: module 1, or have an equivalent knowledge of the language.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

  • This course is based on the tutor’s own material. The tutor will let you know if a book is used.
