The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assesses the English language proficiency of people who want to study or work in English-speaking environments. It provides a fair, accurate and relevant assessment of language skills, based on well-established standards, and covers the full range of proficiency levels, from non-user to expert user.

IELTS: Two Main Tests

IELTS-A (academic) and IELTS-G (General). The main difference between these two tests is that Reading and Writing sections of IELTS-A (academic) have subject matter and tasks suitable for the test takers entering for undergraduate or postgraduate studies. However, Listening and Speaking sections are the same.

Academic Test Format

The total time to complete the test will be 2 hours and 45 minutes. IELTS will focus on four aspects as follows:

  • Listening

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Speaking

1. Listening (30 minutes):

  • There are four recorded monologues and conversations played through headphones.

  • You will answer a series of multiple-choice, matching, and completion questions based on the audio content.

  • The recordings cover a range of accents and topics.

2. Reading (60 minutes):

  • The reading section contains three long texts taken from books, magazines, newspapers, or online sources.

  • There are a variety of question types, including multiple-choice, matching, sentence completion, and short answer questions.

  • The texts become more complex as you progress through the section.

3. Writing (60 minutes):

  • Task 1: For the Academic version, you will be presented with a graph, chart, diagram, or table, and you need to summarize and describe the information in your own words. For the General Training version, you will be given a situation and asked to write a letter responding to it.

  • Task 2: You will write an essay in response to a specific question or statement. You need to provide arguments, examples, and your opinion on the given topic.

4. Speaking (11-14 minutes):

  • The speaking section is a face-to-face interview with an examiner.

  • Part 1: You will answer general questions about yourself, your family, hobbies, and other familiar topics.

  • Part 2: You will be given a cue card with a topic and have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes on the topic.

  • Part 3: The examiner will ask follow-up questions related to the topic in Part 2, allowing for a more in-depth discussion.
