IELTS takes us back to the year 1980. when began as a joint venture between The Cambridge English Language Assessment and The British Council.

It was in the very same year of 1980, that this one-of-a-kind venture was termed UCLES or University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate.

Time went by, and now this was the year 1985. Within just 5 years of rolling forward the number of test-takers rose from 4000 in the year 1980 to quite a handsome count of 10,000 in the year 1985.

But, with the increase in the test taker’s count, also, arose the most typical and pressing challenges of not only managing but also, organizing the test. To counter these administrative challenges, the ELTS, that is The English Language Testing Standard project was established.

Furthermore, there also developed an acute desideratum or in simpler terms, a pressing requirement of international engagement for the purpose of reconditioning and redesigning the test structure.

And, this was the time when IDP (International Development Program ) of Australian Universities, Colleges, and Schools came forward to join hands with the British, and the Cambridge English Language  Assessment (also known as ESOL, that is, English For Speakers Of Other Languages).

This very fruitful international partnership became IELTS, which went on to start its operations in the year 1989. IELTS has since gone through very significant model alternations in the years 1995, 2001, and 2005 to emerge as what it is today.

The IELTS Today

As per the latest data collected, in the year 2019 alone, there have been over 3 million candidates from more than 140 countries around the globe who have taken the test. This phenomenal statistic significantly makes IELTS one of the world’s most popularly systematized assessments.

It is available at over 1,100 test centers internationally and is extensively accepted worldwide by more than 9,000 establishments, such as universities, companies, global executive corporations, and immigration offices.

So, whether you are interested to set an aim for international education, or you want to go for global migration, IELTS undoubtedly is the best choice- a choice that makes the difference.

What Is IELTS ?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. This clearly signifies one thing, as a matter of fact, that it is a test that acknowledges global English, not just British, American, or Australian English for that matter.

In addition to this, there is one more peculiar factor that makes IELTS the front runner, it works on a profound system of skill and language alignment.

English is a language, whereas communication is a skill. And, the well-designed assessment structure of IELTS judges a candidate’s ability to exhibit the language, which is English, through his/her communication, which is a skill.

IELTS Test Versions

IELTS has two test versions- IELTS Academic & IELTS General Training. Let’s try to comprehend both of these two test versions in an easier way.

The IELTS Academic test is designed for those candidates who wish to pursue their higher education in an environment where English is the primary source of communication.

This test pattern in particular mirrors the key elements of the very academic nature of the language, and also, at the same time gauges, whether or not the candidate is prepared to take up his/her studies or even training in an English-speaking country.

This brings us to the second test version, which is the IELT General Training. This test version helps the candidates to try out their hands in global migration.

It is undoubtedly a prerequisite if you want to migrate to countries like the UK, Australia, Canada, and also New Zealand. The structure of the test especially focuses on the very fundamental existence skills in social and employment conditions.

So, basically put, the IELTS General Training test is made for those select groups of people who wish to go to the English-speaking countries primarily for work experience or, in a rare case scenario, for training programs as well.
