What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular high-stakes English language proficiency test for study, work, and migration, with more than three million tests taken in the past year. The IELTS results are recognized by more than 10,000 organizations, including educational institutions, employers, professional associations, and governments, in 140 countries around the world.

You can choose to take your IELTS test either on paper or computer, depending on your convenience. There is no difference in the content, format, or level of difficulty between the two options. Remember, you will have to carefully choose which module you wish to take –  IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training, depending on the purpose of your taking the test. However, to study in the UK, you’ll have to take the IELTS test approved for UK Visa and Immigration.

As one of the pioneers of four skills English language testing today. Governments in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom use IELTS to process immigration applications.

IELTS test format

IELTS is a test of all four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. You will take the Listening, Reading and Writing tests all on the same day one after the other, with no breaks in between. For the Speaking test, you can book a slot online on your preferred date and time. If you fail to choose a slot within the stated time period, a time slot will be automatically allocated to you. The total test time is under three hours.

IELTS Test Dates in India

IELTS test dates are offered up to 4 times in a month making a total of 48 fixed test dates in one calendar year. The availability of IELTS dates in India may differ for the Academic and General Training module. While the Academic version is available on all 48 dates, the General Training version is available on 24 dates. In order to create flexibility and convenience, tests are mostly held on Saturdays and Thursdays. Please note that listening, reading, writing tests shall take place on the same day while the speaking tests will be conducted up to 7 days prior and/or post the test date. It may be possible that your nearest IELTS test location may not offer the same date as another IELTS test city location.

Choosing the right test

There are two IELTS tests available – IELTS Academics or IELTS General Training. The test you choose should be based on what it is you want to do.

IELTS Academics measures whether your level of English language proficiency is suitable for an academic environment. It reflects aspects of academic language and evaluates whether you’re ready to begin training or studying.

IELTS General Training measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. The tasks and tests reflect both workplace and social situations.

If you are taking the IELTS test to support a UK visa application to work, live or study in the UK, you may need to take IELTS for UK visas and immigration Academic or general Training or the IELTS for the life skills test.
