This course is designed as professional development for multi-disciplinary healthcare staff to ensure best practice for infection, prevention and control (IPC) and apply that to Children and Young People (CYP). The module content provides the learners with specialist paediatric IPC knowledge and skills.
Aims of the module:
Facilitate learning and enhance knowledge of infection prevention and control to improve clinical practice in a paediatric setting.
Analyse the value of learned information and apply data related to cause and spread of infection.
Develop an improvement strategy to assist with the management of the burden of healthcare associated and acquired infections.

Assessment
Formative assessment:
Peer presentation on IPC improvement plan.
Summative assessment:
30 minute Viva-Voce of quality improvement project related to infection prevention and control practices in the student’s area of practice

Knowledge and understanding
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of microbiology and virology in relation to the control of infection including cause, spread and chain of infection
Intellectual skills
Critically review the evidence base for paediatric IPC management, new and emerging infections, prevalence and epidemiology in paediatrics and the relation to the immune system and pathogenesis of infection within the Child and Young Person.
Critically evaluate the evidence base from healthcare-associated infections to formulate a strategy to reduce the burden of infection across health & social care
Practical skills
Develop evidence based management strategies for infection prevention and control practices locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Transferrable skills
Critically interrogate data from audit and surveillance including incident investigation and root cause analysis to inform quality improvement.
