This course introduces students to the world of filmmaking. Students are briefly introduced to the history of film as well as given an introduction to visual thinking and writing for film. Students learn to script, storyboard, direct, and edit through demonstrations and class discussions.

Students learn to script, storyboard, direct, and edit through demonstrations and class discussions.
They get a hands-on introduction to the use of cameras, lenses, stock, filters, lights as well as support equipment by working with selected scenes in one of SVA's production studios with pre-built sets.
Students learn the basics of Apple Final Cut Pro digital editing platform and AVID Media Composer. Areas of exploration will include editorial and narrative structure, rhythm and pace.
Students are encouraged to bring in their own film projects for review and feedback.
Portfolio Presentations for Entrance to an Art College:
The care with which an applicant presents and discusses his/her work can play an important part in the admissions and scholarship decisions at art colleges.
Students are encouraged to attend our fall Open House event where the Director of Admissions will give a portfolio presentation and show examples of art work submitted by previous SVA students as well as examples of scholarship level art work.
Pre-College students gain a better understanding as to what they need to do to prepare for an admissions portfolio if they decide to apply to an art college.
Admissions will discuss how students can push students' ideas and art processes to help build stronger and more expressive art work.

The DASH Entertainment Technology program teaches the behind-the-camera aspects of the film world including script-writing, story-boarding, working with editing software such as Final Cut Pro, using state-of-the-art equipment, researching career options in the film industry.
This workshop combines theoretical and practical elements of cinematography with special emphasis on cultivating a film sensibility.
Bring in an exposed roll of black and white film and we'll walk you through the process showing you step-by-step how to develop. Continue your journey in analog photography by following up with our B&W Darkroom Printing Workshop and make a print directly from your negatives.
We create audio/visual stories in groups and as individuals, we showcase our work and share our messages with other teens. We develop industry specific skills with access to equipment and get to know professional filmmakers and artists at the forefront of their medium.
Teachers aren’t the only adults who can benefit from working together in this method! Adults of all levels of experience can explore this wonderful filmmaking process in workshops that result in share-able animated shorts.
