The powerful and functional use of GIS is based on theories and practices. This course is aimed at providing students both theoretical concepts and practical proficiency.
Geography has developed its tool for explaining phenomena. Previously it was a map, but now it is GIS. GIS allows us not only to understand phenomena, but to solve complex spatial problems. Nowadays, GIS is used for various fields related to spatial problems. Handling spatial problems and providing solution is critical for researchers, analysts, and planners.
Although the number of usable data increases rapidly, the number of people who know how to handle it is still limited. This course gives you a chance to learn the basis of GIS.
The powerful and functional use of GIS is based on theories and practices. This course is aimed at providing students both theoretical concepts and practical proficiency. After finishing this course, you are able to:
Understand the theoretical underpinnings of ArcGIS Desktop.
Handle ArcGIS Desktop proficiently.
Apply GIS functions to solve a variety of spatial problems.
Conduct own GIS-related project from start to finish.

Founded For The Greatest Generation. Shaping What’s Next For Future Generations.
In the 1940s, cities across the United States experienced an acute need for workforce expertise to meet marketplace demands sparked by World War II technologies. UNC Charlotte – first known as Charlotte College – is among the universities founded in metropolitan areas for that purpose.
Initially offering only evening classes at Charlotte Central High School, the institution has grown in size and mission to become the region’s preeminent research university, addressing critical 21st-century business, technology, health care, energy and education needs.
Discovery, learning and collaboration take place at two Charlotte locations: a vibrant 1,000-acre campus in University City and an uptown site designed specifically to serve the businesses, organizations and people of an urban center.
As North Carolina’s urban research university, UNC Charlotte is a diverse and inclusive institution with local-to-global impact that transforms lives, communities, and industries through access and affordability, exemplary bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and professional programs, scholarship, creative work, innovation, and service.Approved by the UNC Board of Governors on July 20, 2022.
Vision
To be a globally recognized, emerging top-tier research university driving discovery and innovation, while advancing student access and social mobility, nurturing talent, fostering excellence, and ensuring equity.
Students will learn fundamental concepts in Geographic Information System (GIS). The student will be introduced to introductory content on typical business and technical applications, data, software, and techniques used to accomplish GIS projects.
The certificate program is open to matriculated students enrolled in any graduate program at San José State University (SJSU).  The program is also open to students who hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.Â
Geographic Information Science (GIS) technology is used every day, most often for mapping points of reference and data related to points on the Earth’s surface. GIS jobs are plentiful and growth in the industry is expected to continue in the coming years.
The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Geographic Information Science program is designed to provide Geographic Information Systems (GIS) concepts including but not limited to cartography
Geographic information systems (GIS) use sophisticated software and tools to capture, store, analyze, manage, and present geospatial data.
