What is the IOSH Safety, Health, and Environment for Construction Site Managers course?

The IOSH Safety, Health, and Environment for Construction Site Managers course is a manager-level programme. The course is aimed at those who assume the onsite primary responsibility for daily construction activities. It replaces the now-discontinued IOSH Managing Safely in Construction and IOSH Managing Safely for Construction Managers.

Those who benefit from this IOSH construction course are experienced site personnel familiar with day-to-day construction operations. The training aims to provide such individuals with the confidence and competence to ensure onsite health and safety compliance.

Of all the health and safety courses for construction available, this IOSH course is considered the most prestigious. It is an internationally recognised alternative to the CITB's SMSTS course. On successful completion, delegates are awarded a manager-level health and safety certificate for building sites.

What is included within the course content?

The content is delivered using a range of construction site scenarios. This enables those in attendance to fully relate aspects of their daily role to what is being taught.

The content can be condensed as follows:

  • The law and how it is enforced

  • Prepping a site for the commencement of construction work

  • Daily management of operatives and contractors

  • The purpose and benefits of method statements

  • The purpose and use of permits to work systems

  • Control of environmental aspects and impacts throughout the construction process

  • Construction Design and Management and site manager's duties

  • Onsite welfare requirements

Tutors will teach delegates via a method that develops a broad knowledge of managing all aspects of construction site safety, health, and environmental risk.

How is the IOSH Safety, Health, and Environment for Construction Site Managers course assessed?

The IOSH Safety, Health, and Environment for Construction Site Managers learning is assessed by a multi-format question paper. This assessment method aims to verify the knowledge and skills gained by the construction manager.

Once delegates have passed the multiple-format assessment, they will have two weeks to complete a practical assessment. The practical assessment involves undertaking a site-specific risk assessment on a familiar construction site.

How long does it take?

There are three varying formats in which this course can be delivered. These formats include from the physical classroom or online via Zoom, WebEx, and Microsoft teams.

Alternatively, busy construction site managers can complete the course via a self-directed eLearning programme. Both physical classroom and online versions are typically taught over four full days.

However, the eLearning version can be completed in as little as 24 hours. Health Matters are one of only four providers in the UK and Ireland who can offer this site managers course online via eLearning.

The online eLearning version of this construction health and safety course offers tremendous operation flexibility for construction managers who cannot sacrifice full days away from their sites. Instead, they can complete the content in small bite-sized chunks at a pace that suits them.

Who needs it?

This construction site manager course is appropriate for anyone with managerial responsibilities for health and safety on a construction site. It is particularly relevant for site managers of principal contractors who manage risks from greenfield sites to the handover of completed construction works. One of the course's main aims is to provide site managers with the confidence to make the right choices for their building firm.

Therefore, any manager who has a level of doubt about managing onsite aspects of safety should gain the most benefits. In addition, this course aims to equip site managers with proven techniques on how to create a culture of safety and motivate others to drive health and safety standards through action and attitudes. Any organisation with a poor safety culture that invests in this course should experience a positive return.
